Local Opportunities

  1. 2 new discount airlines planning debuts, promising cheap U.S. flights

Flying has never been cheap. And it seems that two companies have realized that and are trying to do something about it. Moxy and XTRA are planning to operate in smaller airports, in order to keep prices down. And they are doing so because every other airline is trying to do essentially the same thing, merely adding their own twist. According to XTRA CEO Andrew Levy "doing the same thing as everyone else, but trying to do it better, hasn't worked, historically, very well in the airline industry". And since most people travel by plane (regardless of how often it is), this might prove beneficial to lots of consumers.

  2. Ship divers can view underwater art museum off the Florida Keys

Off the coast of Key West lies the General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, former Air Force missile tracking ship that was sunk 10 years ago, creating an artificial reef. And now it's also an underwater museum. Andreas Franke, the Austrian artist who created the 24 illustrations said he wanted to "draw attention to the need to eliminate plastics in the world's oceans". As we know, plastic takes extremely long to biodegrade, and its unfortunately abundant in oceans all over the world. This project's aim is to inform people about plastic in the oceans, and it concerns everyone. We are already dealing with global warming, and numerous animal species are either becoming extinct or getting closer every minute. This is an attempt to help change Earth for the better.

  3. Beef up bus security

Tampa Bay area transit agencies may be moving to make public buses more secure, in light of the events that took place on May 18th, when Thomas Dunn, a driver, was killed by a passenger by slicing his throat. This incident is hardly an isolated one. Since 2008, nearly 2,000 drivers across the U.S. have been taken to hospitals injured after an assault, while Hillsborough County authorities recorded 13 verbal confrontations on average between January and April. With thousands of people riding public buses, these security improvements could very well reduce the amount of aggression in buses, whether that is between passengers, or involving the driver. Options are on the table, like stationing guards at bus stops, implementing live feeds, panic buttons, and on-board emergency warnings.

  4. SaferWatch app aims to keep schools safe; 550 tips reported

Bullying has been around since forever. Most people have been involved with it in some way, whether they were getting bullied, bullying someone else, or simply watching someone else get bullied. SaferWatch has released an app to help prevent precisely that. This app allows users to report crime, suspicious activity, or online threats. It offers real-time communication and information about every report. One of its main uses may well be for schools. School shootings are historically common, and in more present days we start seeing drugs and bullying everywhere. This app can allow school districts to receive tips from other students, parents, or even teachers. This is the particular case of Broward School District, where more than 550 tips have been submitted, and they are pushing for everyone to use SaferWatch.

  5. Bridge repair to cause traffic - downtown [Fort Lauderdale]

    This is a simple one

The Andrews Avenue bridge, in downtown Fort Lauderdale, was narrowed to two lanes, one in each direction, on May 30th, and will remain as is until March 1st. Yes, in 2020. Additionally, the bridge will close completely to vehicles and pedestrians from July 8th to August 6th. This will cause a substantial amount of traffic. And unfortunately, since most people have to work, this will certainly impact people's schedules, with a detour already put in place. And, if that was to happen elsewhere, the situation wouldn't be any different. Everywhere we go, there is traffic when a major road is closed, even if only partially.

  1. Greetings,
I’m curious about your first opportunity. What do you consider affordable? I travel often for work and I find that Sprit airlines has flights for a couple hundred bucks. I’ve flown internationally during non-holiday seasons for less then $200. What would your consumers find affordable? How would airlines travel long distances without stopping at large airports? These are big hurdles for any companies trying to create disruptive change.

p.s. Love the style of your blog!
